New Depeche Mode Music Video Released ..

On 1/29/2024

"Before We Drown"

I don't typically write about new music videos being released .. But I thought what the heck. I had to watch this one a few times to decide for myself if I liked it or not. I decided that I did.. from an artistic standpoint I suppose. Depeche Modes album, 'Violator', was one of the first I had ever purchased, and after hearing their unique syth like sound, I was hook for life. I bought it from a Sam Goody (if you remember that store) and I have been stuck in the Depeche Mode rabbit hole ever since.. for decades now.

So ... Depeche Mode recently released a new music video for their song "Before We Drown," .. directed by Anton Corbijn. The black-and-white video, in Corbijn's signature style, depicts a person in an overcoat entering a tumultuous sea and ultimately drowning. At first I wasn't sure what was going on here, but then it sort of hit me. I'm not a big fan of this dark themed stuff, but hey.. It's Depeche Mode, so I gave it a bit of time to sink in. Now that I've watched it a few times, I give it my thumbs up, but rather just listen to the song on it's own rather than watch the video and listen. I think the song is much deeper than portrayed within this video. The song on it's own is a B+/A in my book.

Here's The Video If You Want To Give It A Look

More About The Video ..

The video is part of a series of collaborations .. Between Depeche Mode and Anton Corbijn for their Memento Mori project. They previously worked together on videos for "Wagging Tongue" and "Ghosts Again." If you watch them all you will become more aware of Corbijn's unique style.

Anton Corbijn, a Dutch photographer and film director .. Is renowned for his work. He has directed films such as "Control" (2007), "A Most Wanted Man" (2014), and "The American" (2010). In addition to his contributions to Depeche Mode's videos over the years, Corbijn is known for directing iconic visuals like Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box" and Coldplay's "Viva La Vida." .. just to name a few.

And for those of you who are interested in another useless fact.. In addition to unveiling the "Before We Drown" video, Depeche Mode performed the track live for the first time during their recent concert at The O2 in London on January 27 (ALSO MY BIRTHDAY). The song was the eighth in their 24-song setlist, following performances of "Walking In My Shoes," "Policy Of Truth," and "It’s No Good." Man I would have loved to have been there. From what I read it was a good show. They're still bringing it.

On A Side Note ..

For those of you that do not follow Depeche Mode news .. The music community recently mourned the passing of Andrew Fletcher, a pivotal member of the iconic band. Fletcher, aged 60, passed away at his home, this past year, on May 26. According to a social media post by the band, the cause of his untimely death was revealed to be an aortic dissection .. a tear in the wall of the body's main artery. Very quickly fans and fellow artists alike began sharing stories in remembrance of Fletcher's significant contributions to Depeche Mode's distinctive sound and enduring legacy. He always considered himself the guy in the background that "Bummed Around", but he was so much more than that.. without him their sound would not have evolved and may not have existed at all.

Thoughts ???

I am interested on you thoughts about the video or the song, and if you even care for Depeche Mode at all. Their music does tend to turn some people off, and if that's the case no worries at all.. Just down vote me - LOL

I've gotta be honest, I don't know much Depeche mode stuff. Maybe that one song embrace the silence. That's about all I can think of.

You bum. lol. You probably know more songs than you think you do. That's OK, there's so many good musicians and bands out there, that you would never run out of material to write about if you wrote about one per day. Sometime when you're bored, you can poke around at some of the older albums and I bet you you'll remember hearing some of those songs.

I didn't realize that he had passed away. Aortic dissections are nasty. I haven't followed them closely in years, but always loved their music. I grew up in the 80's just like you did and was a big fan back then.

I guess I am stuck in the 80's .. lol.
Yes.. Aortic Dissections are nasty. Not the way I want to go, but I guess there really isn't a good way to go. Okay.. maybe there is but trying not to get to morbid here. 😆

One of my favorite bands of all time; they should be on everybody’s favorite bands list. Here goes one I used to love back in 2015:
