Today's travel post is sponsored by my Dad, who went to Lipiny to see what has changed over the years in this district famous all over the country. Spoiler alert: not much has changed, so you can skip the ride and look with me at the photos Dad took there.

Dzielnica w dużej mierze wygląda na opuszczoną, ale nie, ktoś tam jednak mieszka. Jest zaniedbana dość znacznie i mały biznes raczej tam upadł. Odłażące fasady kamienic, brak zieleni, ale nie do końca brak życia.

The district looks largely abandoned, but no, someone lives there. It is neglected quite a bit and small businesses there have rather gone bankrupt. Peeling facades of tenement houses, lack of greenery, but not entirely lack of life.

Smutna jest historia tego miejsca. Bo to kiedyś było nowoczesne centrum przemysłowe. Kopalnia Matylda i huta cynku Silesia dały pracę tysiącom robotników. A następnie nadeszła wojna, nowe ustalanie granic i Lipiny znalazły się po polskiej stronie, odcięte od przemysłu. Od tego momentu nastąpiła tu degradacja społeczna i ekonomiczna, a efekt możemy dziś obejrzeć na tych zdjęciach.

The history of this place is sad. Because it was once a modern industrial center. The Matylda mine and the Silesia zinc smelter gave work to thousands of workers. And then the war came, the borders were redefined, and Lipiny found itself on the Polish side, cut off from industry. From that moment on, social and economic degradation took place here, and we can see the effect today in these photos.

Czy tak musi być? No nie. Potrzebne są jednak ogromne środki, aby zrewitalizować tę dzielnicę. Odnowić kamienicę, przywrócić funkcje społeczne i ekonomiczne. Zrobić z tego to, co zrobiono na Nikiszu: atrakcyjną, modną dzielnicę, bazującą na lokalnych tradycjach i zabytkach.

Does it have to be like this? No, no. However, huge resources are needed to revitalize this district. Renovate the tenement house, restore its social and economic functions. Make it what was done in Nikisz: an attractive, fashionable district based on local traditions and monuments.

Druga opcja to: zrównać z ziemią i wybudować nowe bloki, świeżutko od deweloperów. Ale trochę byłoby szkoda, prawda?

The second option is to raze it to the ground and build new blocks, fresh from developers. But that would be a bit of a shame, wouldn't it?

Lipiny ze względu na swój unikalny charakter brały udział w francuskim filmie - zagrały francuskie górnicze miasteczko w filmie Erica Barbiera "Le brasier" (1990). Stąd francuski napis na kamienicy - przy ul. Barlickiego pozostała reklama francuskiej gazety.

Lipiny, due to its unique character, took part in a French film - it played the role of a French mining town in Eric Barbier's film "Le brasier" (1990). Hence the French inscription on the tenement house - an advertisement for a French newspaper remains on Barlickiego Street.
