Here I am again, readers and music lovers of Hive.🙌🏻
I have been a little absent from my blog, due to various stressful situations that I hope to be able to tell you about in another opportunity, however... I am always happy to share my music reviews, it gives me joy to write about something I am passionate about, and what better than to share it with you. Today I have the immense pleasure to bring you an important album in Shakira's career, which I will be listening to for the first time.
I've been feeling some anxiety and pressure these past few days, and you know what my favorite remedy for ailments of the mind and heart is: Music. It's my first experience with this album without counting its biggest hit, but without further ado, let's talk a little bit about what is the work we'll listen to today.
"Oral Fixation, Vol. 2" is the artist's 5th major work, and the first to be entirely in English. It serves as a follow-up to "Oral Fixation, Vol. 1", her predecessor album and one of the greatest in Latin music. It served to catapult Shakira to the pinnacle of success, especially with the second single of this era, "Hips Don't Lie", giving her the first Top 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and being the first Latina to achieve this milestone. Now, let's grab a delicious snack, our headphones and let's get to work, we'll listen to "Oral Fixation, Vol 2" by Shakira.
She's the greatest cook
And she's fat free.
We start with a single that has not been heard much throughout Shakira's career, and preceding one of her biggest hits makes it easily forgotten. Does it mean that the song is bad? Not at all, I found myself with a wonderful song in the middle of the album, mainly because of a magnificent production that surprised me in all the good ways. Don't Bother encompasses the best of pop rock and pop.
While it wasn't a huge hit, it was well received commercially, it was a song that passed with little fanfare. But let's focus on how it made me feel, being all positive. It feels like listening to a bit of Avril Lavigne, made a bit more Latin. I really like the bridge part, where it's universe spoken, or rather, whispered, before going into an excellent last chorus that fills you with vigor and tinges of unbridled rage. I feel it would be ideal to hear it in concert. And Shakira's voice, once again perfection, fitting the genre wherever it is placed.
While the lyrics don't make a lot of sense, we see her talking to the guy she loves, comparing herself to the new girl he has. Shakira says that the other girl is much better than her, even that she is a lot to him. She communicates to him that he has nothing to worry about, as she will get out of this one. But I understand the criticism at the time, because it can look a bit pointless in parts. However, I find it enjoyable beyond the lyrics, the production easily makes up for that.
She make a man wanna speak Spanish.
We come to perhaps one of the biggest and most remarkable moments, not only for Shakira, but also for Latinos as a whole. Being ranked as the best Latin Pop song and one of the greatest pop songs in general, Hips Don't Lie is Shakira's first number 1 in the biggest music market, a number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 meant a great catapult for the Colombian's career.
The production is simply perfect, chef kiss, and I'm not just saying that because I've grown fond of the performer, but the amount of elements, references, perfectly executed samples, make it a classic. It sounds Latin enough to pay tribute to Latin American culture, and pop enough to be a global hit that everyone likes. It encompasses elements of salsa, which makes it even more incredible. It seems crazy to me that Shakira had to do a lot of hard work to convince her label to make the song the second single, and boy was it worth it.
Lyrically speaking, the song tells us how Shakira is attracted to people who can dance and move well. Although she has said that she was inspired by how her "hips don't lie" when it comes to a song, she knows it's perfect or finished when her own hips move on their own to the rhythm of the song. There's no reason not to like this song, and I'm pretty sure you've heard it at least once. And we all know the myths and theories surrounding the song, said mystery can be treated as a whole separate post, to tell you the truth.
the way you've done it.
The third single, and in my opinion, the least strong of them all, is Illegal, a collaboration with the great Carlos Santana, who makes his presence felt with his excellence on guitar. Although the song had a hard task, it seems to me that he did well, as it is known that it was not successful, but it was an excellent closure to this era of Fijación Oral, both volume one and volume two.
The production is much calmer than what we have been working with in these eras, with all the essence of the singer's beginnings, and with the accompaniment of Santana with his guitar, who delights you with that beautiful sound throughout the song. It gave me the feeling of seeing again that Shakira who enjoyed MTV Unplugged and the most relaxed rock.
It speaks from pain, from the abandonment of a partner who left her for someone else, while she still loved him. The song, lyrically, feels quite soft, quite painful but from a peaceful point of view. And it was nice to hear the reference to Alanis Morrisette, a great artist, especially in those days when she was a musical icon.

Taken from GeniusThis is, once again, the artist's peak, and while I feel that these are words I have said, I think it was a defining moment, a well-deserved success for a Latin artist who put up not only the name of Colombia, but of Latin America. It is incredible how in each album she leaves her personal mark, that work that resembles her, her roots, and yet she always manages to innovate, to do something that has not been heard in her, and above all, to do something improved and polished.
Listening to this album, full English, was a great moment in my week, and I thank Shakira for that. She manages to communicate something beyond words, but with music, the world language, and that makes her a monumental artist. We see how she engages in a conversation with someone who leaves her for another girl, in the same album that opens with a song that is about a direct conversation with God. It is a great proof of the infinite talent that the blonde brings us album after album. She collaborates with greats such as Gustavo Cerati and Carlos Santana, always putting her touch and taking ownership of those songs that go down in history in one of the albums, and era in general, more important in the history of Latin music and music in general.

Less favorites: Animal City, Your Embrace.

Maybe it is controversial, but for me it is difficult for her to overcome this incredible musical moment that she gave us with two albums, one in English and one in Spanish. We see how she has improved, she has studied the market, she knows what to do and how to move, how to show her talent at its maximum power and still manage to be successful, she knows how to consolidate herself as a great singer and without the need to do commercial things, but she does them deep and with her unique style, with her style of protest and love.
Yes, I have given her a 10 / 10 because in my opinion she deserves it. I enjoyed the whole album, I had fun, I identified myself and I cried, and that's why this is the first album I rate with a perfect score, because even my least favorite song I found fantastic, and it made me explore different sounds that I didn't expect and that in the end I liked quite a lot. Estuve un poco ausente de mi blog, debido a diversas situaciones estresantes que espero poder estar contándoles en otra oportunidad, sin embargo… Me alegra siempre compartir mis reseñas musicales, me da alegría escribir de algo que me apasiona, y qué mejor que compartirlo con ustedes. Hoy tengo el inmenso placer de traer un álbum importante en la carrera de Shakira, el cuál estaré escuchando por primera vez.
He sentido cierta ansiedad y presión estos últimos días, y ya saben cuál es mi remedio favorito para los malestares de la mente y el corazón: La música. Es mi primera experiencia con este álbum sin contar su éxito más grande, pero sin más preámbulo, hablemos un poco de lo que es el trabajo que escucharemos hoy.
"Oral Fixation, Vol. 2" es el 5 trabajo importante de la artista, y el primero en ser completamente en inglés. Sirve como una continuación de "Fijación Oral, Vol. 1", su álbum predecesor y uno de los más grandes de la música latina. Sirvió para catapultar a Shakira a la cima del éxito, en especial con el segundo sencillo de esta era, "Hips Don't Lie", otorgándole el primer Top 1 en el listado del Billboard Hot 100, y siendo la primera latina en lograr este hito. Ahora sí, tomemos un delicioso snack, nuestros audífonos y manos a la obra, que escucharemos "Oral Fixation, Vol 2" de Shakira.
Es la mejor cocinera
Y está libre de grasas.
Empezamos con un sencillo muy poco sonado a lo largo de la carrera de Shakira, y es que precederle a uno de los hits más grandes hace que pases fácilmente al olvido. ¿Significa que la canción es mala? Para nada, me he encontrado con una maravillosa canción en medio del álbum, sobre todo por una magnífica producción que me sorprendió en todos los buenos sentidos. Don’t Bother abarca lo mejor del rock pop y el pop.
Si bien no fue un gran éxito, tuvo buen recibimiento comercial, fue una canción que pasó sin pena ni gloria. Pero enfoquémonos en cómo me hizo sentir, siendo todo positivo. Se siente como escuchar un poco de Avril Lavigne, hecha un poco más latina. Me gusta mucho la parte del puente, donde es universo hablado, o mejor dicho, susurrado, antes de entrar a un excelente último coro que te llena de vigor y tintes de rabia desenfrenada. Siento que sería ideal escucharla en un concierto. Y la voz de Shakira, una vez más perfección, encajando en el género donde sea puesta.
Si bien la letra no tiene gran sentido, vemos que habla con el chico que habla, comparándose con la nueva chica que tiene él. Shakira dice que la otra chica es mucho mejor que ella, incluso que es mucho para él. Le comunica que no tiene de qué preocuparse, pues ella saldrá de esta. Pero entiendo las críticas en su momento, porque se puede ver un poco sin sentido en algunas partes. Sin embargo, me parece disfrutable más allá de la letra, la producción fácilmente compensa eso.
Aquella noche yo me enloquecí (Enloquecí).
Llegamos al que quizá sea uno de los momentos más grandes y remarcables, no solo para Shakira, pero también para los latinos como tal. Siendo catalogada como la mejor canción Latin Pop y una de las más grandes del pop general, Hips Don’t Lie es el primer número 1 de Shakira en el mercado más grande de la música, un número 1 en el Billboard Hot 100 significó una gran catapulta para la carrera de la colombiana.
La producción es simplemente perfecta, chef kiss, y no lo digo solo porque he ido agarrándole cariño a la intérprete, pero la cantidad de elementos, referencias, samples perfectamente ejecutados, hacen que sea un clásico. Suena lo suficiente latina para rendirle tributo a la cultura latinoamericana, y lo suficientemente pop para ser un hit global que guste a todos. Abarca desde elementos de salsa, lo que la hace aún más increíble. Me parece una locura que Shakira haya tenido que hacer un arduo trabajo para convencer a su disquera de hacer la canción el segundo single, y vaya que valió la pena.
Líricamente hablando, la canción nos dice como Shakira siente atracción por personas que saben bailar y moverse bien. Aunque ella ha dicho que ella se inspiró en cómo sus “caderas no mienten” cuando se trata de una canción, ella sabe que está perfecta o terminada cuando sus propias caderas se mueven solas al ritmo de la canción. No hay razón para que no les guste esta canción, y estoy bastante seguro que la han escuchado al menos una vez. Y todos sabemos los mitos y teorías que envolvían a la canción, dicho misterio puede ser tratado como todo un post aparte, a decir verdad.
en la forma como lo hiciste.
El tercer sencillo, y a mi parecer, el menos fuerte de todos, se trata de Illegal, una colaboración con el grande de Carlos Santana, quien deja sentir bien su presencia con su excelencia en la guitarra. Si bien la canción tuvo una ardua tarea, me parece que lo hizo bien, pues es sabido que no fue exitosa, pero fue un excelente cierre a esta era de Fijación Oral, tanto volumen uno como volumen dos.
La producción es mucho más calmada que lo que veníamos trabajando en estas eras, con toda la esencia de los principios de la cantante, y con el acompañamiento de Santana con su guitarra, que te deleita con aquel hermoso sonido durante toda la canción. Me dio la sensación de volver a ver a esa Shakira que disfrutaba del MTV Unplugged y del rock más relajado.
Habla desde el dolor, desde el abandono de una pareja que la dejo por alguien más, mientras ella aún lo amaba. La canción, líricamente, se siente bastante suave, bastante dolorosa pero desde un punto de vista pacífico. Y fue hermoso escuchar la referencia a Alanis Morrisette, una gran artista, en especial en aquellos tiempos donde ella era un ícono musical.

Taken from GeniusEsta es, una vez más, la cumbre de la artista, y si bien siento que son palabras que he dicho, creo que fue un momento determinante, un éxito bien merecido para una artista latina que puso en alto no solo el nombre de Colombia, pero de Latino América. Es increíble como en cada álbum ella deja su marca personal, ese trabajo que se asemeja a ella, a sus raíces, y aun así siempre logra innovar, hacer algo que no se ha escuchado en ella, y sobre todo, hacer algo mejorado y pulido.
Escuchar este álbum, full inglés, fue un momentazo en mi semana, y eso se lo agradezco a Shakira. Logra comunicar algo más allá de las palabras, pero con música, el lenguaje mundial, y eso hace que ella sea una artista monumental. Vemos como entabla una conversación con alguien que la abandona por otra chica, en el mismo álbum que abre con una canción que se trata de una conversación directa con Dios. Es una gran prueba de ese infinito talento que nos trae la rubia álbum tras álbum. Colabora con grandes como Gustavo Cerati y Carlos Santana, poniendo siempre su toque y adueñándose de esas canciones que pasan a la historia en uno de los álbumes, y era en general, más importante en la historia de la música latina y la música en general.

Quizá sea controversial, pero para mí es difícil que ella logre superar este increíble momento musical que nos regaló con dos álbumes, uno en inglés y uno en español. Vemos como ha mejorado, ha estudiado al mercado, sabe qué hacer y cómo moverse, como mostrar su talento a su máxima potencia y aún así lograr ser exitosa, sabe cómo consolidarse como una gran cantante y sin necesidad de hacer cosas comerciales, pero las hace profundas y con su estilo único, con su estilo de protesta y enamoramiento.
Sí, le he puesto un 10 / 10 porque a mí parecer lo merece. Disfruté todo el álbum, me divertí, me identifiqué y lloré, y por eso este es el primer álbum al que califico con un puntaje perfecto, porque incluso mi canción menos preferida me pareció fantástica, y me hizo explorar distintos sonidos que no esperaba y que al final me gustaron bastante.
