🌊NORMAN FUCKING ROCKWELL!🌊

🦋ALBUM REVIEW🦋

It is a pleasure for me to greet you on this beautiful Thursday afternoon.

I love to share music posts, especially my reviews, I get a lot of inspiration when I do them and I listen to music that I love. Listening to music is one of my favorite things, as well as writing, and having found this activity where I mix both is great. Today I am pleased to bring you the following review of Deep Dive we are doing to Lana Del Rey's discography, and it is nothing less than the best album she has done so far.

Picsart_22-11-17_17-05-00-419.png

I've been practically waiting to review this album. It's been my favorite era for Lana, it's one of her most popular and critically acclaimed. Today I woke up having a bad day, as sometimes happens, one of those days where you feel like you just want it to be night again and go back to sleep. So I said to myself: "Why don't you make yourself a nice hot coffee with a cookie?" and said as done, I made myself that snack and something in me connected everything. I had to review this album that would undoubtedly improve my mood.

Before we get into what the review is all about, let's talk about the incredible Norman Fucking Rockwell!. The NFR! era kicks off in 2018 when Lana releases the first promotional single, "Mariners Apartment Complex", which would later be followed by "Venice Bitch" and "hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have - but i have it". It is an album influenced by a sub-genre called psych-rock, with touches of piano accompanying Lana's voice and sometimes some synthesizers that add a particular sound to the album. With the help of Jack Antonoff, Del Rey wraps herself in the sadcore that has characterized her and prepares to give us the best work of her career. Now, I invite you to make yourself a hot coffee for this rainy season, bring some delicious cookies and join me for a review of "Norman Fucking Rockwell!" by Lana Del Rey.

1. Norman fucking Rockwell

Goddamn, man-child
You fucked me so good that I almost said "I love you"
.

Nominated for the main category at the Grammys "Song of the Year", we have before us the title track and the opening track, a beautiful ballad, in which Lana reintroduces us to a totally different sound. From the first lines of the song, you know that this is a wild ride that you are going to enjoy enormously. Del Rey tells us in this piece about a pretentious and immature poet, but the one she is in love with.

Speaking of the production, this piece kicks off Lana's new sound, with more piano and less hip-hop, which feels extremely refreshing and is something we needed. Is it my favorite on the album? Not at all, but I can recognize how immensely good it is. Had I connected with it a bit more, I might give it a higher score than a 9 / 10, because it deserves a high score.

2. Mariners Apartment Complex

You took my sadness out of context
At the Mariners apartment complex.

Lana Del Rey's musical evolution peaks here, on this album, and this song that serves as our lead single is proof of that. It's something so experimental but at the same time feels so good to listen to, like an uplifting ballad where Lana guides you, offers you her hand, embraces you while you feel lost. Lana not only establishes herself as an excellent music producer, but also as the poet she always wanted to be.

Mariners Apartment Complex is a song that you have to listen to more than once in order to get attached to it, it's not a song that you will love the first time, because it's a little deeper and more complex than that. But believe me, once you love it, there's no turning back, it becomes a piece that won't leave your head. It has nice lyrics, nice production and it's very poetic, it's Lana at her best, another successful 9 / 10.

3. Venice Bitch

Fear fun, fear love
Fresh out of fucks , forever.
*

I'm going with the longest song in Lana's career and, strangely, one of the ones I usually listen to the most. A ten minute long masterpiece, is a ten minute song worth listening to? The answer is OBVIOUSLY YES, there is no way this is not an excellent song, not in vain the media has catalogued it as the best song produced by Jack Antonoff (who has made important works such as "Melodrama" and "1989").

If we talk about the production, it is incredible how magical and psychedelic this song sounds, in many different ways. Guitars and synthesizers make this song a strange and nostalgic trip that, somehow, feels extremely good. Lyrically, Lana tells us about her, about a general vision of the person she is and being in love, in a poetic way (we see Lana do that in a row on this album). It's inevitable that I won't give this song a 10 / 10 well deserved.

4. Fuck it I love you

I like to see everything in neon
Drink lime green, stay up till dawn
.

Following the sound that Lana has been working on this album, she delivers one of the fastest songs of this project. She talks to us in this song about somber topics like death, but without moving away from the title of the song, where she says: "Fuck it, I love you", taking us to that light love, to an adventure. This song produces different sensations in me, it is very sensual and at the same time it sounds cute and intriguing, a very interesting mix.

When in the bridge Lana tells us: "California dream, I've got my money on my mind" I immediately knew it was a gem. The vocal talent that Lana gives us, paired with a lot of interesting sounds, make this one of the Top songs on the album. It feels like a whole new piece that reminds us of the Born To Die era, if that makes any sense. Anyway, it's another high score for this album, a 10 / 10.

5. Doin’ Time

Summertime, and livin's easy
Bradley's on the microphone with Ras MG.

Lana Del Rey's cover on an album could not be missing, and it feels wonderful that it is with this perfect song for the summer. Lana delivers one of her biggest hits in her career, a song that has managed to grow in the hearts of fans and the general public (also thanks to the help of TikTok).

The song is perfect for a day at the beach and some nice cold beers, it's tailor-made for summer. There's not much to say about the lyrics, it sounds pretty much like a pop song whose main goal is to be catchy (and boy does it succeed!). It's a marvel of a song, it's super light and that's something that's often needed on an album, a 10 / 10 without a doubt.

6. Love Song

In the car, in the car, in the backseat, I'm your baby
We go fast, we go so fast we don't move
.

Choosing a favorite song on this album is mission impossible, but this is definitely one of the Top ones, it's extremely incredible how easy it can be to listen to this song. I remember dedicating it, because it's extremely beautiful, it's a precious love song, whose production transmits pure love, it's a poetry for a person you love very much. It's Lana at her most loving and that's a beautiful thing to witness.

When Lana says, "Oh, be my only time in life. Lying on your chest, in my night gown" I can't hold back the tears, it's too much love in one line, both in the production and the way Del Rey delivers that part, vocally speaking. It's a 10 / 10, making this project unforgettable.

untitled.gif

7. Cinnamon Girl

Cinnamon in my teeth
From your kiss, you're touchin' me.

Five minutes of art, let's start there. Del Rey does it again and delivers a masterpiece that immediately goes to the Top of the best songs on the album. It's sad, deep, exquisite, with complex and poetic lyrics, with a strangely enjoyable and distinct production. It feels like listening to an elevated version of Venice Bitch, production-wise. There isn't a single way in which this song isn't a complete work of art from start to finish, it's as addictive as it is perfect.

In the lyrics we see how Lana talks about intense romance, comparing it to drugs and pills, but then she talks about cinnamon, her sweetness and it's almost like seeing her talking about the notorious transition and evolution of the Lana of Ultraviolence and the Lana of NFR!. The outro of the song is outstanding, it's exquisite and it's almost a constant incitement for you to listen to the song again and again. The 10 / 10 for sure that this album has, no doubt in my mind (I should mention that I have a funny story with this song, because I sang it on loop the day I broke up with a partner I had a while ago).

8. How to disappear

John met me down on the boulevard
Cried on his shoulder 'cause life is hard
.

Compared to the monumental song that is its predecessor, "How to disappear" feels much calmer and lighter. It's about Lana talking about her mixed feelings for a man but who is unable to share his emotions and feelings. It's an easy song to listen to and fairly straightforward.

It's not my favorite, nor do I think it's one of her best. I never managed to connect with it in all the time I've had listening to the album, it doesn't feel like a song I'd come back to constantly, but it doesn't stray from the sound the album has been driving and overall it sounds pretty good. An 8 / 10 more than suits it and reminds me that even such a perfect album has its songs that you're not going to connect with.

untitled.gif

9. California

You don't ever have to
Be stronger than you really are
When you're lyin' in my arms, baby.

We are well into the album and there is still not a single song that is bad, unnoticed or that seems to me to be filler, and this piece is not going to be the exception. California, with lyrics of love and nostalgia, tells us about a person with whom Lana was romantically linked and with whom Lana seems to tell us how she misses him, almost as if yearning for a "classic American love".

Sound-wise, it's a bit slower and more somber than the rest of the songs we've heard so far. My favorite part is how Lana says, "You don't ever have to act cooler than you think you should, you're brighter than the brightest stars." There are lines in this song (and on the album in general) that I feel like Lana was saying to me, and to connect on that level with an album is amazing. Another 10 / 10 for this incredible project.

10. The Next Best American Record

My baby used to dance underneath my architecture
To the Houses of the Holy ringing, smokin' on them cigarettes.

Another one of the Top, and undoubtedly the best bridge of this album. Lana delivers a reversal of a song that was leaked a while back (And this version is noticeably better). Lana talks, again, about nostalgia and love, but with clear references to previous works such as Heroin and Art Deco.

The highlight of this song is, and I quote Genius "an acapella bridge that morphs into layers of heavenly harmonies of various Lanas on top of each other". There is no way I don't love this song, it feels amazing to listen to and at times I get stuck on it and spend up to hours listening to it. It's obviously a clear 10 / 10.

11. The greatest

I miss Long Beach and I miss you, babe
I miss dancing with you the most of all.

We got our hands on the nostalgia peak of this album. Ranked as a fan favorite (in Del Rey's entire career), it's arguably one of Lana's best-crafted songs and one of the most enjoyable to listen to. Not only that, but Lana gives us an almost apocalyptic song, a masterpiece in every aspect and a critique of current popular culture, even mentioning Kanye and missile alerts.

I must confess that, despite all the fan love, this is not my favorite Lana song nor does it make it into the Top, at least for me. I never felt a magnificent connection like others claim to have felt, but that won't blind me, I know it's a peerless masterpiece and it's a 9 / 10, personally I feel it's not a 10, that's all.

untitled.gif

12. Bartender

All the ladies of the canyon
Wearin' black to their house parties.

I finally found a song I didn't like on such a fucking perfect album. Don't get me wrong, it's a good song, it's important to see how cryptic it is, where Lana tells us that she quit drinking and what it's like to constantly have to be hidden from the public eye because she's a celebrity. The thing about this song is that the production seems very simple to me (no, it's not just the piano, because with California Lana did something totally different), plus the way Lana delivers the lines feels bland, there's something that doesn't quite fit for me.

I can give it a 7 / 10, going solely for its lyrics, because production-wise the song leaves a lot to be desired.

13. Happiness is a butterfly

Do you want me or do you not?
I heard one thing, now I'm hearing another.

We're almost at the end of this wonderful journey and somehow Lana manages to show us once again her ability to make an incredible work of art. Currently popularized thanks to TikTok. It must be one of the Top in the highest positions, it's a work that deserves to be heard by the whole world, I'm not exaggerating. I can't believe how cute, sad, emblematic, iconic and delicate this song can be where Lana tells us that happiness is like a butterfly that you try to catch but it keeps escaping.

There are multiple changes in the production and the rhythm of the song, always accompanied by the sound of a piano, and they make this song, in company of Lana's voice, an impeccable work, there is no other way to describe it. I remember hearing little leaked snippets of this song and instantly knew it would be one of my favorites (how right I was!). A 10 / 10 and it was known.

14. hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have - but I have it

I was reading Slim Aarons and I got to thinking that i thought.
Maybe I'd get less stressed if I was tested less like
All of these debutantes
.

First of all, yes, that's the title of the song. Now, let's talk a bit about it, its lyrics and production and why it's a definite 10 / 10 and one of the best album closers in Del Rey's career.

The song is extremely sad, it makes me cry every time I listen to it. With a piano and her voice, Lana manages to convey what she sings, with lines like, "Don't ask if I'm happy, you know I'm not, but at least I can say I'm not sad"'. It is the ultimate song to close the album, and it is profound, with beautiful references to poet Sylvia Plath, who is a great influence and inspiration for Lana Del Rey.

Lana only needed a piano, her voice and poetry and she gave us one of the deepest and saddest songs of her career. And as the title says!, hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me, but I have it.

Final Score

9.4 / 10

photo_2022-11-17_18-03-02.jpg

Taken from Genius

Deep Dive came in for Best Album, and truly Lana shined with every aspect of this album. I still consider it the biggest steal in Grammy history, as Norman Fucking Rockwell! was nominated AND DIDN'T WIN. It's Lana's most polished, professional, beautiful and incredible work and I hope someday she manages to do something that's on that level, a well-deserved high score (and probably the highest we'll find in Del Rey's career). I wouldn't say it's my favorite album of hers, but I can say it's her best and most acclaimed.

Melancholic lyrics, an exquisite voice and an out-of-this-world production by the hand of Antonoff, Lana brings us a work that is undoubtedly impeccable, deserving of all the success and recognition it has and, in my opinion, should be even more popular among the new generations. In this project we see how the interpreter also talks about politics, as in "Lust For Life", but handling it in a better way.

And that's how we end this review and approach the end of Lana Del Rey's Deep Dive, leaving us with only two albums to review (so far). It was an incredible journey to hear this album again and I will definitely continue to listen to it after reviewing it, because it has timeless gems. Now, tell me, have you already listened to this iconic and incredible work by Del Rey? What did you think of it? Remember I love reading your comments and finding out there are other Lana Del Rey fans in the hive.

🌊NORMAN FUCKING ROCKWELL!🌊

Picsart_22-11-17_17-04-06-345.png

La era NFR! inicia en el 2018 cuando Lana lanza el primer sencillo promocional, “Mariners Apartment Complex”, al que luego le seguiría “Venice Bitch” y “hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have – but i have it”.

1. Norman fucking Rockwell

Maldita sea, hombre tan inmaduro
Me follaste tan bien que casi digo, "Te amo"
.

4. Fuck it I love you

5. Doin’ Time

8. How to disappear

10. The Next Best American Record

Con Houses of the Holy sonando, fumando sus cigarros.

11. The greatest

Extraño Long Beach y te extraño a ti, cariño

13. Happiness is a butterfly

¿Realmente me quieres o no?

Popularizada actualmente gracias a TikTok.

photo_2022-11-17_18-06-43.jpg

14. hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have - but I have it

Tal vez me estresaría menos si me hicieran menos pruebas
Como a todas estas debutantes
.
