🌈I'm extremely happy to be back here!

After a big time off and focusing my content on other branches, it's time to get back to giving my opinion on the albums I listen to. And while I'm waiting for Lady Gaga to release her long awaited LG7 and the new LG6.5 announcement, I'll be giving my opinion about the most recent work of another of the great Pop Stars of the 00's and 10's, 143 by Katy Perry.

Luego de un gran tiempo de descanso y de enfocar mis contenidos a otras ramas, es momento de volver a dar mi opinión en los álbumes que escucho. Y mientras espero que Lady Gaga saque su tan esperado LG7 y el nuevo anuncio de LG6.5, estaré dando mi opinión acerca del más reciente trabajo de otra de las grandes Pop Stars de la década de los 00’s y 10’s, 143 de Katy Perry.

We all know this great artist who brought us great hits well remembered in the last decade, such as Dark Horse, I Kissed A Girl and E.T, which marked the course of pop for a few good years. However, after the great failure that Witness represented, and the beginning of a crashing fall, we have been waiting for the Katy who marked a generation with great anthems, to come back.

Pop lovers had an eye on Ms. Perry before the release of this album, which visually promised to bring us something innovative, refreshing and what we could say “instant classic”... However, “143” failed to meet those expectations.

Todos conocemos a esta gran artista que nos trajo grandes hits muy recordados en la década pasada, tal como Dark Horse, I Kissed A Girl y E.T, que marcaron el rumbo del pop durante unos buenos años. Sin embargo, luego del gran fracaso que representó Witness, y el inicio de una caída estrepitosa, hemos esperado que la Katy que marcó una generación con grandes himnos, volviera.

Los amantes del pop tenían un ojo puesto en la señorita Perry antes del estreno de este álbum, que visualmente prometía traernos algo innovador, refrescante y que pudiéramos decir “clásico instantáneo”… Sin embargo, “143” no logró cumplir dichas expectativas.

With visuals that reminded us of a bold and daring pop style, figures borrowed from more alternative artists like FKA Twigs and Arca, everything seemed to point to Katy Perry taking risks with the pop formula and the campy touch that she usually adds. She brought us an album heavily influenced by hip-hop, house sounds and repeating the mix that helped her reap her biggest hits. However the album fails to give us that vision, just a stale visit to a repeated formula that not only failed her on Witness, but now feels more tired.

Not only that, but she completes by producing the album with one of the most controversial people in the music scene today, Dr. Luke, who with severe abuse allegations, is not the ideal person to carry a message of feminism, but quite the opposite. And we understand that Katy Perry is trying to get back to producing with him because he was a mainstay on her previous hits, however, she only achieved the opposite.

Con visuales que nos recordaban a un estilo pop atrevido y osado, figuras prestadas de artistas más alternativas como FKA Twigs y Arca, todo parecía apuntar a que Katy Perry tomaría riesgos con la fórmula pop y el toque camp que ella suele agregar. Nos trajo un álbum bastante influenciado por el hip-hop, sonidos house y repitiendo la mezcla que le ayudó a cosechar sus grandes hits. Sin embargo el álbum falla en darnos esa visión, solo una visita rancia a una fórmula repetida que no solo le falló en Witness, sino que ahora se siente más cansada.

No solo eso, si no que completa con producir el álbum con una de las personas más controversiales en la escena musical actual, Dr. Luke, quien con severas acusaciones de abuso, no es la persona ideal para llevar un mensaje de feminismo, sino todo lo opuesto. Y entendemos que Katy Perry trata de volver a producir con él porque fue un pilar en sus éxitos anteriores, sin embargo, solo logró lo contrario.

Sure, it has positive aspects, few and far between, but it has them, because despite the lack of good lyrics, pop doesn't always have to be deep and can just be about having fun. And while it's true that many of the lyrics sound like something out of CHAT-GPT itself, some of them are just fun. The truth is that it's not ideal to make an entire album without a message or something remarkable in the writing, and this detracts quite a few points from the album, because it's fine to listen to four songs like this, but when it's a full project, it's tiring just to listen to meaningless drivel with a moving beat.

The album features multiple collaborations of which only two feel moderately successful, as is the case of GORGEOUS with Kim Petras and ARTIFICIAL with JID. In the rest, besides the notable lack of chemistry between artists, and how boring they turn out to be, they are simply not very enjoyable. And I can't fail to mention I'M HIS, HE'S MINE with Doechii, which in my opinion is a great waste of the sample he takes from “Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)” by Crystal Waters, in a version that seeks to make Queer Bait, something that is no longer well seen nowadays.

Claro que tiene aspectos positivos, pocos y contados, pero cuenta con ellos, puesto que a pesar de la carencia de buenas letras, el pop no siempre debe ser profundo y puede tratarse solo de diversión. Y aunque es cierto que muchas de las letras parecen sacadas del mismísimo CHAT-GPT, algunas son solo divertidas. La verdad es que no es idóneo hacer un álbum completo sin un mensaje o con algo destacable en su escritura, y esto resta bastantes puntos al álbum, porque está bien escuchar cuatro canciones así, pero cuando se trata de un proyecto completo, es cansón solo escuchar boberías sin sentido con un ritmo movido.

El álbum cuenta con múltiples colaboraciones de las cuales solo dos se sienten medianamente acertadas, como es el caso de GORGEOUS con Kim Petras y ARTIFICIAL con JID. En el resto, además de la notable falta de química entre artistas, y lo aburrida que resultan ser, simplemente son poco disfrutables. Y no puedo dejar de mencionar I’M HIS, HE’S MINE con Doechii, que a mi parecer es un gran desperdicio del sample que toma de “Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)” de Crystal Waters, en una versión que busca hacer Queer Bait, cosa que ya no es bien vista en la actualidad.

Now, highlighting the songs I really enjoyed, I can't simply skip CRUSH, GORGEOUS, NIRVANA and ARTIFICIAL, which is quite a lot considering it's an 11 song album with a total running time of 33 minutes and 39 seconds.

The album is unmemorable, a collection of bad decisions, Dr. Luke throwaways and a lousy choice of singles to promote an album that borders on boring and that you'll listen to only once. And no, including his daughter Daisy's voice and making it a cute song for her doesn't make the album close well, but rather shows us a desperate attempt to try to make a good closing, which it also fails at.

Ahora, destacando las canciones que realmente disfruté, no puedo simplemente obviar CRUSH, GORGEOUS, NIRVANA y ARTIFICIAL, lo cual es bastante tomando en cuenta que es un álbum de 11 canciones con una duración total de 33 minutos con 39 segundos.

El álbum es poco memorable, una colección de malas decisiones, descartes de Dr. Luke y una pésima elección de sencillos para promocionar un álbum que raya en lo aburrido y que escucharás una sola vez. Y no, incluir la voz de su hija Daisy y hacerla una canción linda para ella no hace que el cierre del álbum sea bueno, sino que nos demuestra un intento desesperado por tratar de hacer un buen cierre, cosa en la que también falla.

To close my review, I rate the album a 3.5 / 10, an album that shows us that superstar Katy Perry will never again be what she once was, letting us know that she will not achieve what she did not achieve with her two previous projects, Smile and Witness, and that the formula of making the joke and bringing cheap pop no longer pays off.

Para cerrar mi crítica, puntúo el álbum con un 3.5 / 10, un álbum que nos demuestra que la súper estrella Katy Perry no volverá a ser lo que alguna vez fue, haciéndonos saber que no logrará lo que no alcanzó con sus dos proyectos anteriores, Smile y Witness, y que la fórmula de hacer el chiste y traer un pop barato ya no da resultados.
