\r\n\r\n\r\nAlthough there are many people who think that the piano is an ancient instrument, its birth dates back to the 18th century. This instrument differed from its predecessors by the simple fact that it could be played softly (which in Italian is *piano*) or loudly (which in that language is *forte*) and its original name was *pianoforte*, precisely because of this quality. Although in the end it was massively shortened to piano.\r\n\r\nBut this instrument had to wait for the development of the metallurgical industry, that is, the industrial development, to be able to cast the frames for the strings that could withstand the enormous tension generated by the strings inside, which is about 20 tons in a normal piano.\r\n\r\nOnce this milestone had been reached, and with the inclusion of the full range of the 88 keys that make up the instrument, it became the instrument of choice for composers, arrangers and all those involved in musical creation, since it offered the full range of the orchestra.\r\n\r\nVery soon the great compositions for the piano, both solo and orchestral, appeared and its diffusion became massive.\r\n\r\nThe piano was so important that there was a time when a woman had to know how to play it in order to marry. This, of course, was at the level of high society.\r\n\r\nBut its ability to create harmony, but also melody, and also to perform percussive functions, and to have a register that allowed the bass to be independent in the left hand, soon made musicians everywhere identify with it, and it was incorporated into popular musical forms.\r\n\r\nThe same phenomenon occurred in Cuba and throughout the Caribbean. In some musical forms, such as the danz\u00f3n, it was part of that genre from the beginning, but in others, such as the son, it came to replace the function originally performed by the Cuban tres.\r\n\r\nIn the chachach\u00e1, one of the children of the danz\u00f3n, it became a fundamental part, just as it was an obligatory part of the groups known as sonora.\r\n\r\nWith the regular use of this instrument comes the musicians who excel in it. Although I did not mention it in the video, in the case of Cuba, a name that cannot be left unmentioned is that of Ernesto Lecuona, who has done an important work both in the field of classical and popular music.\r\n\r\nBut the list of names is endless, and I will only dare to mention three who have left a deep mark on the island, such as Bebo Valdez, his son Chucho Valdez, who became known mainly through his musical project \"Irakere\", and more recently, pianists such as Gonzalo Rubalcaba.\r\n\r\nIn the journey that Antillean music took to the United States, this union between the piano and Caribbean rhythms was consolidated. As in all countries, the piano had been incorporated into regional traditions, so in the northern country it had already taken root and played an important role in jazz. And, as I have mentioned several times, jazz and Latin music were in a constant and fundamental exchange.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAlthough there are many names of pianists who stood out in Latin rhythms in the United States, I will mention only two. The best-known of all is without a doubt Eddie Palmieri. Este instrumento se diferenciaba de sus predecesores por el simple hecho de que en \u00e9l se pod\u00eda tocar suave (que en italiano se dice *piano*) o fuerte (que en ese idioma se traduce *forte*) y su nombre original era *pianoforte*, precisamente por esa cualidad. Aunque al final pasamos a abreviarlo masivamente como piano.\r\n\r\nPero este instrumento tuvo que esperar al desarrollo de la industria metal\u00fargica, es decir, el desarrollo industrial, para poder fundir los marcos para las cuerdas, que pudieran resistir la enorme tensi\u00f3n que generan las cuerdas en su interior, que es de aproximadamente 20 toneladas, en un piano regular.\r\n\r\nUna vez logrado ese hito y con la incorporaci\u00f3n del registro completo de las 88 teclas que lo componen, este pasa a ser el instrumento preferido de compositores, arreglistas y todos los que tuvieran que ver con la creaci\u00f3n musical, pues este ofrece el registro completo de la orquesta.\r\n\r\nMuy pronto aparecieron las grandes composiciones para el piano, tanto solista, como dentro de las orquestas, y su difusi\u00f3n se hizo masiva.\r\n\r\nEra tal la importancia del piano, que hubo un tiempo en que para una mujer poder casarse, deb\u00eda saber tocarlo. Esto, claro est\u00e1, suced\u00eda a nivel de la alta sociedad.\r\n\r\nPero su cualidad de hacer armon\u00eda, pero tambi\u00e9n melod\u00eda y adem\u00e1s cumplir funciones percutivas y disponer de un registro que permit\u00eda independizar el bajo en la mano izquierda, hizo que pronto los m\u00fasicos de todas partes empezaran a identificarse con \u00e9l y este se incorporara a formas musicales populares.\r\n\r\nEse mismo fen\u00f3meno se dio tambi\u00e9n en Cuba y todo el Caribe. En algunas formas musicales, como el danz\u00f3n, fue parte desde el nacimiento de este g\u00e9nero musical, pero en otros casos, como en el son, este vino a sustituir la funci\u00f3n que originalmente cumpl\u00eda el tres cubano.\r\n\r\nEn el chachach\u00e1, que es uno de los hijos del danz\u00f3n, pas\u00f3 a ser parte fundamental, as\u00ed como fue parte obligatoria en los grupos conocidos como sonora.\r\n\r\nCon el uso regular de este instrumento, vienen los m\u00fasicos que destacan en \u00e9l. Aunque no lo mencion\u00e9 en el video, en el caso de Cuba, un nombre que no puede dejar de citarse, es el de Ernesto Lecuona, quien cumpli\u00f3 una importante labor, tanto en el campo de la m\u00fasica cl\u00e1sica, como en la popular.\r\n\r\nPero la lista de nombres es interminable y solo me atrevo a mencionar a tres que han dejado una huella profunda en la isla, como lo han sido Bebo Valdez, su hijo Chucho Valdez, quien se dio a conocer principalmente por su proyecto musical \"Irakere\", y de m\u00e1s reciente data, pianistas como Gonzalo Rubalcaba.\r\n\r\nEn el viaje que hizo la m\u00fasica antillana a Estados Unidos, termin\u00f3 de consolidarse esta uni\u00f3n entre el piano y los ritmos caribe\u00f1os. Pues al igual que en todos los pa\u00edses el piano se hab\u00eda ido incorporando a las tradiciones regionales, tambi\u00e9n en el pa\u00eds del norte ya se hab\u00eda arraigado y en el jazz cumpl\u00eda una labor de primer orden. Y tal como lo he mencionado varias veces, el jazz y la m\u00fasica latina tuvieron un intercambio constante y fundamental.\r\n\r\nAunque son muchos los nombres de los pianistas que destacaron en los ritmos latinos, en Estados Unidos, solo voy a nombrar dos en esta oportunidad. El m\u00e1s conocido de todos, sin duda, Eddie Palmieri.
