The initial version of the song was written by Jackson and John Barnes in 1985, and the demo was recorded in 1986. The original title was "Al Capone," and it was later revised and rewritten as "Smooth Criminal." It reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the R&B Singles chart. In the UK, it peaked at number eight, becoming his seventh Top 30 single from this album.
It was re-released on Visionary: The Video Singles. The re-released single reached number 19 in the UK.
