Open Mic: March 29 2024

Hello Hivers!
Anke here aka Anna-NewKey.

Lots of practicing yesterday in preparation for upcoming gigs. Mark Smith was running the open mic at the Hen & Chickens and I had let him down the last couple of times, so this time it had to happen. I was told it's been very quite in there lately so I thought we'd play to an empty pub, but it wasn't yesterday, pretty busy in fact.

When we had finished people asked us if we're back on again later, which was brilliant showing that we do have party quality.
The guy in the photo was pretty good doing slower country stuff, but it's just not what people want to hear on a Friday night.

There was a girl with quite a good voice, who apparently had won a local competition. She was pretty full of herself singing along to her tablet, basically doing karaoke.. sorry, but that is what it is in my opinion. 😄

Anyway, glad I went and it was lovely seeing Mark and the locals again. If we're lucky we might even get a gig out of it..

That's it for today; Thanks for looking!

Sounds like fun and yes, some singers, hmmm, there was a girl at an event I went to recently who came on to sing, she was referring to a song sheet, was quite good but I wasn't totally convinced. The proliferation of talent shows these days, where everyone thinks they are a singer lol!

Oh, don't get me started on sheets! 🙄😄
They just sing along to a song and don't even bother to learn the lyrics?
We rotate the same songs, but we could play 100s if we were to use sheets. It's unprofessional and should be avoided in my opinion.

But the most annoying thing is, that they win competitions without much work, no instrument to learn or to control, all they need is a big mouth, and I don't mean for singing.. 🤣

Have a lovely Easter!

Most of them were placed on a pedestal as kids. So talented, don’t know where they get it from. Errr, they don’t have any talent that’s why ha ha! I reply!

Have a great one yourself 😀

There's plenty of variety in music out there. The audience will decide what they enjoy. Some people are more into singing than playing an instrument, but they still need to make a good performance from it.

I've actually done very little karaoke. I enjoy playing the guitar more when I sing.

I hear you, but I don't find it takes much effort to sing along to a backing track. Yes, the audience decides, but all it is is a DJ singing along to the music they put on.
If they were to organise a guitarist or other instrumentalist to go with them, then that's a different thing, but with the noise they make they make it hard for us raw players.
There are some venues with specific rules, be on time and tuned up, don't give a lengthy introduction to your songs and such like and some don't allow backing tracks.
I found some of these "acts" funny where they take longer setting up than us, because their tablet wouldn't work with the system or they had no internet to get the lyrics..
I mean, honestly, that is just not on.. right?

I remember some instances at the social club where they had ads on the backing tracks from Youtube, but that is an informal setting where people are not paying to be there. Non-musicians may be less picky about things we might complain about. I think there are a fair few performers who work with backing tracks as they just won't get paid enough to cover live musicians.
