If You don't like Taylor Swift, don't listen to her music
I have been a fan of Taylor's since she began her career. I have witnessed all her eras and stages, from country and her transition to pop, to her experimentation with more indie and folk sounds. I have also observed her as a person, going through many different phases, both in love and heartbreak, from being cancelled to being at the top of the world, all from very close quarters.
That's why, since her album ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ was released last Friday, I've received multiple messages saying ‘what a terrible album’, ‘Taylor isn't the same anymore’, ‘she's always so boring’, and at this point I'm tired of arguing with people and explaining, refuting, etc., but it is a bit exhausting that these things keep happening. You wouldn't want me to write bad things about your favourite artist just because I don't like them, and that's where this post comes in.
My problem with some people's excessive criticism is that if you're already biased and have never liked someone, why do you keep expecting something from them that they don't deliver? Personally, I don't like Billie Eilish or Lana del Rey, so I don't follow their careers, let alone their discographies. It's not that you can't criticise. In fact, even though I like the album, I don't think it's one of the blonde's best works, but I don't subject her to unnecessary criticism either. I don't like it, I don't listen to it, and that's it. Life goes on.
I think it's very ugly that we demand things from artists that border on the point of incongruity. They criticised The Tortured Poets Department because it had flowery language and was very melancholic, but this album is very happy and has simple language. But they didn't like 1989 either because it wasn't country anymore, and even less so Lover because it was too cheesy. It seems like there's no way to satisfy them, which mainly happens with Taylor Swift. I don't see them demanding too much from other artists, and mind you, I understand that she's in a privileged position, so to speak, but they're never happy with anything, and it's exhausting.
That's why this post has this title, because if you're aware that you don't like someone or something, the right thing to do would be to let it go and move on.
