REVIEW: Sisters with transistors (2020) [ENG - ESP]
A film about music that is not in the genre of musicals and for some people might not even be classified as music. I'm talking about a documentary that is about four years old and was on my list to see until this weekend. How is it? It's not that easy to answer. Please, let me tell you.
SYNOPSIS
Documentary about virtuoso women who made their contributions to electronic music with advanced equipment for the time and with a well-defined concept of what they wanted. More than a visual experience, it is a sound experience, using fragments of pieces produced at the time as if they were pages of a book to tell you a story.
DON'T EXPECT MORE FROM A DOCUMENTARY
Be clear about the genre. Don't expect twists in the story, elaborate scenes or surprising dialogue. It is a documentary. We come to be told something that someone thought should be made known.
I like the fact that the order will not necessarily be chronological, but that it will be the evolution of the music itself that will mark the order of the characters that contribute to the story. After all, she is the real protagonist.
It amazes me how these brave women used what they had to create what they wanted, whether it was capturing a sound, editing it, moulding it, or creating it out of nothing. And something remarkable I saw in several of them: as children they were linked to sound either by their own ear or by equipment. This makes me think how advantageous it is to give our children some possibility to art from a very young age. It's not about forcing them, but showing them the way, that you can do something with it, and see if they want to go down that road. Very good.
I think it was a good idea to use resources such as colours and images to try to transmit the ideas they wanted to convey, since perhaps with music alone it was difficult for many of us to follow the narrative.
Having finished watching this documentary, I can give the first recommendation (not a spoiler): if you decide to watch it, do it with good speakers. I think that if you watch it on a mobile phone, tablet or using the speakers of a laptop or desktop you won't be able to fully appreciate what they are producing.
It's amazing how humans manage to standardise and tabulate intangible things so that they can be understood, managed and even serve as prompts for a machine to do what is in a human's head. Part of this admirable process is revealed in this production.
Perhaps the overriding message of this production is to exalt the role of women in this musical genre. But paying attention to the well thought out dialogue prepared, there is also an important message regarding the common intentions these composers had in generating their music. Please don't get up without getting it.
THE SCENE
The last one, definitely. After exposing you to all the theory, they show what it looks like in practice to enjoy these pieces, in case we weren't convinced yet.
MY OPINION
Did I like it? Yes. Do I recommend it? No. Why? Because it is not for everyone. Starting with the fact that many people don't like electronic music. Within that group, many don't master certain technical language, such as frequencies, oscilloscope, synthesizer, white noise...
Perhaps, many of them associate the term ‘electronic music’ with the ‘boom boom’ of a discotheque or open-air festival. So the ear will not be used to listening to what this documentary exposes. And I'm not saying that mine is trained for this. I have studied sound in certain trainings I have attended, and prepared speaker placement diagrams for events of over twelve thousand people, which has meant that my ear has been prepared with a few more problem-solving frequencies, even. But I must admit that in some parts of the film I had to turn down the volume because my ears started to hurt.
If you want to have some general culture, if you want to hear sounds you probably haven't heard before, if you have good speakers, if you know how to place your expectations well, if no one else will point the finger at you for having made a ‘bad’ choice, well, this is a good choice.
Un film sobre música que no está en el género de musicales y para varios podría ni siquiera catalogarse como música. Les hablo de un documental que ya tiene unos cuatro años y que estaba en mi lista por ver hasta éste fin de semana. ¿Qué tal es? No es tan sencillo de responder. Por favor, deja que te lo cuente.
SINOPSIS
Documental sobre mujeres virtuosas que hicieron sus aportes a la música electrónica con equipos avanzados para la época y con un concepto bien definido de lo que querían. Más que una experiencia visual, es una experiencia sonora, que emplea fragmentos de piezas producidas en esa época como si fueran hojas de un libro para contarte una historia.
NO ESPERES MÁS DE UN DOCUMENTAL
Hay que estar claro con el género. No hay que esperar que haya giros en la historia, escenas muy elaboradas o diálogos sorprendentes. Es un documental. Venimos a que nos cuenten algo que alguien creyó que había que darlo a conocer.
Me gusta que no necesariamente el orden será cronológico, sino que será la misma evolución de la música que marque el orden de los personajes que vienen aportando a historia. Al fin y al cabo, es ella la verdadera protagonista.
Me sorprende cómo éstas valientes mujeres emplearon lo que tenían para ir creando lo que querían, bien sea capturar un sonido, editarlo, moldearlo, o crearlo de la nada. Y algo sobresaliente que vi en varias de ellas: de niñas estaban vinculadas con el sonido bien sea por su propio oído o un equipo. Ésto me hace pensar de lo ventajoso que es darle a nuestros niños alguna posibilidad al arte desde muy pequeño. No se trata de obligarlos, sino mostrarle el camino, de que se puede hacer algo con eso, y ver si ellos quieren transitar ese rumbo. Muy bueno.
Creo que fue una buena idea utilizar los recursos como los colores e imágenes para tratar de transmitir las ideas que querían, puesto que quizás sólo con la música era difícil que muchos siguiéramos la narrativa.
Al terminar de ver éste documental, puedo dar la primera recomendación (no es spoiler): si decides verla, hazlo con buenos altavoces. Creo que si la vez en un celular, tablet o usando los altavoces de una laptop o desktop no vas a poder apreciar completamente lo que ellas están produciendo.
Maravilla cómo el ser humano logra estandarizar y tabular cosas intangibles para poder entenderlas, manejarlas e incluso que sirvan de prompts para una máquina y ella haga lo que está en la cabeza del humano. Parte de ese admirable proceso es puesto de manifiesto en esta producción.
Tal vez el mensaje que en primer plano está en ésta producción es exaltar el papel de la mujer en éste género musical. Pero poniéndole atención al bien pensado diálogo preparado, hay un mensaje también importante en cuanto a las intenciones en común que tenían esas compositoras al generar su música. Por favor, no levantes sin recibirlo.
LA ESCENA
La última, definitivamente. Luego de exponerte toda la teoría, muestran cómo se ve en la práctica el disfrute de éstas piezas, por si aún no nos habíamos convencido.
MI OPINIÓN
¿Me gustó? Sí. ¿La recomiendo? No. ¿Por qué? Porque no es para todo el mundo. Empezando que a varios no les gusta la música electrónica. Dentro de ese grupo, varios no dominan cierto lenguaje técnico, como frecuencias, osciloscopio, sintetizador, ruido blanco...
Tal vez, varios asocien el término "música electrónica" con el "pum pum" de una discoteca o festival a cielo abierto. Así que el oído no estará acostumbrado a escuchar lo que expone este documental. Y con eso no estoy diciendo que el mío sí esté entrenado para esto. Sí he estudiado el sonido en ciertas capacitaciones que he asistido, y preparado diagramas de ubicación de altavoces para eventos de más de doce mil personas, lo cual ha hecho de que mi oído se haya preparado con algunas frecuencias más para resolver problemas, inclusive. Pero debo admitir que en algunos tramos de la película tuve que bajar el volumen porque mis oídos empezaron a dolerme.
Si quieres tener un poco de cultura general, si quieres escuchar sonidos que probablemente no hayas escuchado antes, si tienes buenos altavoces, si sabes ubicar bien tus expectativas, si nadie más te señalará por haber hecho una "mala" elección, pues, ésta es una buena opción.

No soy mucho de ver documentales, aunque si me he visto varios interesantes. Siempre he bueno conocer de historias ya que así nos documentamos de sucesos de transcendencia. Veré si le doy un vistazo a esta más allá que no la recomiendes. Entiendo que no es para todo el mundo.

Me encantó que aclaraas que se trata de un documental, pues la gente al escuchar la palabra largometraje, la asocian por lo general a la ficción y a la manera en cómo se presentan las historias de este tipo. Un documental es otra cosa, que también no es para todos, más aún cuando se trata de temas que son apreciados por conocedores,
No conozco mucho de la música electrónica, pero me encantan los documentales y en cómo nos instruyen sobre cosas que de otra manera no tendríamos intereses.

The documents are interesting because they show us the roads traveled, the events that occurred. I never thought there could be one on this subject, I love it, now I have an opinion on these lines of yours.
I firmly believe that children from an early age should be involved in activities, sports or music, maybe others, it keeps them busy and gives them discipline, in my case my son played baseball until he was 16, before enrolling him in the first school I took him for two weeks and then I asked him if he was sure he wanted to continue, he answered yes and I proceeded to read him the primer telling him what it implied.
So sometimes when he said he didn't want to continue, I reminded him that he had decided and now he had to assume, that it wasn't about how he woke up, that a lot of things in life had to do with perseverance.
Some things regarding the children should be forced, that's how I see it, because they do not know what they want, for example, not all, if not most of them like to go to school and they have to be forced, as others do not like to take a bath.
